Project Background

As a result of the Florida Springs and Aquifer Protection Act signed into law by the Governor in July, 2016, Hernando County was tasked to find ways to comply with the requirements associated with the 2016 legislation and developed restoration plans (BMAPS). The Septic to Sewer Conversion Plan is Hernando County Utility Department's (HCUD) response to the state mandated Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal System Remediation Plan requirement for Weeki Wachee Springs (more detailed information can be found under Project Overview on side panel).

Septic companies are distributing fliers that make it sound like you are going to be required to have your septic system pumped before you are connected to the new sewer system. If you have signed your Temporary Construction Easement document (TCE), your system will be pumped as part of the dismantling portion of this project at no additional cost. Please ignore these notices!
If you are experiencing interruptions of trash pickup in your area, please contact us so we can make arrangements for the cans to be moved to a nearby pickup area. The trash cans will be brought back to their original location at the end of the day by the contractor.

The answer depends on whether a Temporary Construction Easement (TCE) has been signed.

If the TCE has been signed:
The contractor’s construction schedule will determine when your property is connected to the new sewer system. The contractor will coordinate the work with the homeowner and ensure that all required project deadlines are met. At this time, we anticipate completion of all sewer connections within Sewer Shed 2 will take approximately four months. Sewer Shed 6 may take additional time to complete while the contractor completes Shed 2.
If the TCE has not been signed:
Pursuant to Hernando County Ordinance Sec. 28-238 and Florida Statute 381.00655, once the centralized sewer system is in place and in service, properties within the new sewer service area are required to connect. Property owners will have one year from the availability of sewer service to complete the connection. Property owners who have not signed the TCE will be notified via mail when sewer service is available.
At this time, we anticipate the centralized sewer system for Sewer Shed 2 will be placed into service within the next six weeks. Sewer Shed 6 may take additional time to complete while the contractor completes Shed 2.

The gravity sewer system for Sewer Shed 2 and 6 has been completed. The next part of the project involves connecting individual homes to the new system. Those connections are anticipated to begin within the next month. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Phase 2 is scheduled to begin after Phase 1 - Sewer Shed 5 is completed.
Once scheduled, project staff will notify property owners and host an open house for Phase 2 to provide updates and answer questions about the project. Please continue to check the website periodically for updates regarding Phase 2 open house information.
